Mechanism Of Action Of Carbimazole
- Carbimazole is converted to the active metabolite methimazole in the body, which inhibits the enzyme thyroid peroxidase.
- This prevents the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin, leading to reduced synthesis of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).
Therapeutic Indications Of Carbimazole
- Treatment of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
- Preparation for thyroidectomy in hyperthyroid patients.
- Adjunct to radioiodine therapy.
Method Of Administration Of Carbimazole
- Take the tablets orally with a glass of water, usually once or twice daily as prescribed.
- Can be taken with or without food.
- Dosage is individualized based on thyroid hormone levels and clinical response.
Undesirable Side Effects Of Carbimazole
May cause:
- Rash or skin reactions
- Itching
- Joint pain
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, upset stomach)
- Headache
- Agranulocytosis (rare but serious)
- Liver dysfunction
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precaution While Taking Carbimazole
- Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary; lowest effective dose should be used.
- Use with caution during breastfeeding; may pass into breast milk—monitor the infant’s thyroid function.
Warnings & Special Precautions While Taking Carbimazole
- Seek immediate medical attention if sore throat, fever, or mouth ulcers develop (signs of agranulocytosis).
- Regular blood tests (CBC, liver function, thyroid levels) are required during treatment.
- Use with caution in patients with liver impairment or pre-existing hematological abnormalities.
- Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking before starting carbimazole.
