Mechanism Of Action Of Cabergoline
- Cabergoline belongs to a group of medicines called dopamine agonists and prolactin inhibitors.
- It works by increasing the release of dopamine in the brain, which leads to decreasing the release of prolactin and growth hormone in the body
- Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland located in the brain. During pregnancy, it stimulates milk formation
Therapeutic Indications Of Nostifix 0.5 Mg Tablets
- Cabergoline may be used for:
- Stopping breast milk production for medical reasons only, and when you and your doctor have decided that it is necessary. Bromocriptine should not routinely be used to stop breast milk production.
- Treating fertility and period problems usually caused by not having the right amount of prolactin. This includes polycystic ovary syndrome (reduces prolactin levels)
- Treating non-cancerous tumors in the brain called prolactinomas (reduces prolactin levels)
- Treating Parkinson’s Disease (increases dopamine levels).
Method Of Administration Of Nostifix 0.5 Mg Tablets
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
- Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
- Doses may change from patient to patient based on your age, your medical condition and whether or not you are taking other medicines.
- It is recommended you take Cabergoline with or after food to help reduce feelings of nausea or vomiting.
- To prevent milk production (lactation): You should take 1 mg (two 0.5 mg tablets) on the first day after delivery.
- To stop lactation once you have started to breast-feed: You should take 0.25 mg (one half of Cabergoline 0.5 mg tablet) every 12 hours for two days.
- To reduce prolactin levels in other conditions: You should initially take one 0.5 mg tablet (to be taken in two doses) spread out over a week (e.g. half a tablet on Monday and the other half of the tablet on Thursday). Your dose will be increased up to a maximum dose of 4.5 mg per week or until you have responded fully to treatment. The maximum dose should not exceed 3 mg per day.
- Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
- If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
- If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
- Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

- Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Feeling and being sick
- Constipation
- Abnormal or unusual thoughts
- Development of a widespread itchy rash

- Before you use this medicine talk to your doctor or pharmacist:
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of this medicine.
- If you have kidney or liver problems.
- If you have heart diseases
- If you have, or have ever had stomach ulcers and bleeding
- If you have history of serious mental disease, particularly psychotic disorders
- If You have low blood pressure
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medications including over-the-counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.
