Mechanism Of Action Of Propranolol

• Blocks beta-adrenergic stimulation, beta receptors stimulate the heart and increase its rate, force of contraction & conductivity
• Beta-blocker protects the heart from too much activity. This medicine works by affecting the body’s response to some nerve impulses, especially in the heart.
• As a result, it slows down the heart rate and makes the heart more efficient at pumping blood around the body.

Therapeutic Indications Of Indicardin 40 Mg Tablets

• Hypertension: High blood pressure is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.
• Angina (chest pain)
• Some arrhythmias (disorders of heart rhythm)
• Protection of the heart after a myocardial infarction (heart attack)
• Migraine
• Essential tremor (involuntary and rhythmic shaking)
• Certain thyroid conditions
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle)
• Pheochromocytoma (high blood pressure due to a tumor usually near the kidney)
• Bleeding in the esophagus is caused by high blood pressure in the liver.

Method Of Administration Of Indicardin 40 Mg Tablets

• Adults:

1. Hypertension (high blood pressure): Initially 40 mg two or three times daily, which may be increased by 80 mg per day at weekly intervals.
2. Angina (chest pains) and tremor: Initially 40 mg two to three times daily, which may be increased by 40 mg per day at weekly intervals.
3. Protection of the heart after a heart attack: Initially 40 mg four times a day and after a few days changes to 80mg twice a day
4. Arrhythmias: 10 to 40 mg three or four times daily
5. Pheochromocytoma: Before an operation: 60 mg daily. Non-operable treatment dose: 30 mg daily.
6. Liver disease due to high blood pressure: Initially 40mg twice daily, increasing to 80mg twice daily.

• Pediatric population:

1. Propranolol can also be used to treat children with migraine and arrhythmias: For migraine, the dose under the age of 12 is 20 mg two or three times daily and the adult dose for children 12 years or older.
2. Propranolol can also be used to treat children with migraine and arrhythmias: For arrhythmias, the dosage will be adjusted by the doctor according to the child’s age or weight.

• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.

• To measure blood pressure correctly:

1. Don’t eat or drink anything 30 minutes before you take your blood pressure.
2. Empty your bladder before your reading.
3. Sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported for at least 5 minutes before your reading.
4. Put both feet flat on the ground and keep your legs uncrossed.
5. Rest your arm with the cuff on a table at chest height.
6. Make sure the blood pressure cuff is snug but not too tight. The cuff should be against your bare skin, not over clothing.
7. Do not talk while your blood pressure is being measured.

• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Propranolol if you:

2. Have diabetes as Propranolol may change your normal response to low blood sugar, which usually involves an increase in heart rate. Propranolol may cause low blood sugar levels even in patients who are not diabetic.
3. Have thyrotoxicosis. Propranolol may hide the symptoms of thyrotoxicosis.
4. Have kidney or liver problems (including cirrhosis of the liver). If so, talk to your doctor because you may need to have some check-ups during your treatment.
5. Have heart problems.
6. Suffer from muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
7. Have conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchospasm because the use of Propranolol can aggravate these conditions.

8. Cimetidine (for stomach problems)
9. Rifampicin (for the treatment of tuberculosis)
10. Theophylline (for asthma)
11. Warfarin (to thin the blood) and hydralazine (for hypertension)
12. Fingolimod (for treating multiple sclerosis)
13. Fluvoxamine and barbiturates (to treat anxiety and insomnia)
14. MAO inhibitors (to treat depression)

Storage Conditions Of Indicardin 40 Mg Tablets

• Store below 25°c
• Don’t refrigerate
• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
• Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.

Normal Ranges

• Normal: Blood pressure numbers of less than 120/80 mm Hg
• Elevated: is when readings consistently range from 120-129 systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic.
• Hypertension Stage 1: is when blood pressure consistently ranges from 130-139 systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic.
• Hypertension Stage 2: is when blood pressure consistently ranges at 140/90 mm Hg or higher.
• Hypertensive crisis: This stage of high blood pressure requires medical attention. If your blood pressure readings suddenly exceed 180/120 mm Hg, wait five minutes and then test your blood pressure again. If your readings are still unusually high, contact your doctor immediately. You could be experiencing a hypertensive crisis.
