Mechanism Of Action Of CYPROHEPTADINE
- H1 histamine receptor antagonist; competes for H1-receptor sites in target cells in the respiratory tract, blood vessels, and gastrointestinal tract.
- Sedative first generation
Therapeutic Indications Of Periactin Tablets
- Perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Vasomotor rhinitis
- Allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods
- Mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema.
- Amelioration of allergic reactions to blood or plasma
- Cold urticaria
- Dermatographism
Method Of Administration Of Periactin Tablets
- Age 2 to 6 years:
- The total daily dosage for pediatric patients may be calculated based on body weight or Body area using approximately 0.25 mg/kg/day
- The usual dose is 2 mg (1 /2 tablet) two or three times a day, adjusted as necessary to the Size and response of the patient. The dose is not to exceed 12 mg a day.
- Age 7 to 14 years:
- The usual dose is 4 mg (1 tablet) two or three times a day adjusted as necessary to the size and response of the patient.
- The dose is not to exceed 16 mg a day.
- Adults:
- The total daily dose for adults should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/day.
- The therapeutic range is 4 to 20 mg a day, with the majority of patients requiring 12 to 16 mg a day.
- An occasional patient may require as much as 32 mg a day for adequate relief.
- It is suggested that dosage be initiated with 4 mg (1 tablet) three times a day and adjusted According to the size and response of the patient.
- Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
- If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
- If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
- Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.
Undesirable Side Effects Of Periactin Tablets
- Sedation and sleepiness (often transient), dizziness, disturbed coordination, confusion, restlessness euphoria & hallucinations
- Allergic manifestation of rash and edema, excessive perspiration, urticaria, photosensitivity
- Hypotension, palpitation, tachycardia, extrasystoles, anaphylactic shock.
- dryness of mouth, epigastric distress, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, jaundice.
- Urinary frequency, difficult urination, urinary retention, early menses.
- Dryness of nose and throat, thickening of bronchial secretions, tightness of chest and wheezing, nasal stuffiness.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Periactin Tablets
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor before taking this medicine
Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advice To Reduce Common Cold
- Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids.
- Try to breathe moist air. Use a humidifier or take a steamy shower.
- Consume warm fluids (soup or tea) to provide relief for a stuffy nose and to loosen phlegm.
- Eat a well-balanced diet. If you cannot, ensure you are getting enough nutrients by taking a daily multivitamin.
- Avoid dairy products, as they can thicken phlegm.
Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Periactin Tablets
- Do not take the Tablets: if you are allergic to Cyproheptadine, any other antihistamines or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Cyproheptadine has an atropine-like action and, therefore, should be used with caution in patients with:
- History of bronchial asthma
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Hyperthyroidism
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypertension
- MAO inhibitors prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of antihistamines.
- Antihistamines may have additive effects with CNS depressants, e.g., hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, antianxiety agents.
