Mechanism Of Action Of Xylometazoline
- A sympathomimetic that directly acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in arterioles of the nasal mucosa to produce vasoconstriction resulting in decreased blood flow.
- Xylometazoline is a decongestant used for reducing nasal congestion caused by allergies or the common cold.
- Xylometazoline causes blood vessels in the nasal passages to shrink (vasoconstrictor).
- Vasoconstriction reduces nasal congestion by preventing fluid from draining from blood vessels into nasal passages.
Therapeutic Indications Of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drop
- Nasal congestion (blocked nose, including colds).
- Perennial and allergic rhinitis (recurring inflammation of nasal mucous membranes, including hay fever).
- Sinusitis (to aid drainage of secretions in affections of paranasal sinuses).
- As an adjuvant in otitis media, to decongest the nasopharyngeal mucosa.
- To facilitate rhinoscopy.
Method Of Administration Of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drop
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
- Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
- Before you start using this medicine for the first time, read the instructions carefully and follow them.
- Otrivin Metered Dose Nasal Spray is for nasal administration ONLY.
- Do not use in eyes or mouth.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- It is recommended to make the last application shortly before going to bed.
- Otrivin should not be used for longer than 1 week since prolonged use can lead to damage to mucosa (rhinitis medicamentosa).
- Doses will depend on your medical condition.
- Average dose: 1 spray/drop into each nostril, 3-4 applications per day.
- Do not use for more than 5 days.
