Mechanism Of Action Of Xylometazoline

  • A sympathomimetic that directly acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in arterioles of the nasal mucosa to produce vasoconstriction resulting in decreased blood flow.
  • Xylometazoline is a decongestant used for reducing nasal congestion caused by allergies or the common cold.
  • Xylometazoline causes blood vessels in the nasal passages to shrink (vasoconstrictor).
  • Vasoconstriction reduces nasal congestion by preventing fluid from draining from blood vessels into nasal passages.

 

Therapeutic Indications Of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drop

  • Nasal congestion (blocked nose, including colds).
  • Perennial and allergic rhinitis (recurring inflammation of nasal mucous membranes, including hay fever).
  • Sinusitis (to aid drainage of secretions in affections of paranasal sinuses).
  • As an adjuvant in otitis media, to decongest the nasopharyngeal mucosa.
  • To facilitate rhinoscopy.

 

Method Of Administration Of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drop

  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • Before you start using this medicine for the first time, read the instructions carefully and follow them.
  • Otrivin Metered Dose Nasal Spray is for nasal administration ONLY.
  • Do not use in eyes or mouth.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose.
  • It is recommended to make the last application shortly before going to bed.
  • Otrivin should not be used for longer than 1 week since prolonged use can lead to damage to mucosa (rhinitis medicamentosa).
  • Doses will depend on your medical condition.
  • Average dose: 1 spray/drop into each nostril, 3-4 applications per day.
  • Do not use for more than 5 days.
