Mechanism Of Action Of Atenolol

  • Blocks beta-adrenergic stimulation, beta receptors stimulate the heart and increase its rate, force of contraction & conductivity
  • Beta-blocker protects the heart from too much activity. This medicine works by affecting the body’s response to some nerve impulses, especially in the heart.
  • As a result, it slows down the heart rate and makes the heart more efficient at pumping blood around the body.

 

Therapeutic Indications Of Normoten 100 Mg Tablets

  • Treat high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Treat uneven heartbeats (arrhythmias)
  • Help prevent chest pain characterized by a painful feeling of tightness in the chest (angina pectoris)
  • Protect the heart in the early treatment after a heart attack (myocardial infarction)

 

Method Of Administration Of Normoten 100 Mg Tablets

  • Treatment is initiated at a low quantity, e.g. 25 mg.
  • Adults:
  1. High blood pressure (hypertension): The usual quantity for adults is 100 mg once a day
  2. Certain types of chest pain (angina pectoris): The usual quantity for adults is 50–100 mg once a day
  • This medicine is not suitable for use in children.
  • Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
  • If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
  • Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

 

Undesirable Side Effects Of Normoten 100 Mg Tablets

  • Stop taking Atenolol tablets and see a doctor or go to the hospital straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects:
  1. Allergic reactions: If you have an allergic reaction, see a doctor straight away. The signs may include raised lumps on your skin (weals), or swelling of your face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat.
  2. An abnormal heartbeat, feeling dizzy, tired, or fainting. This could be signs of heart block.
  3. Shortness of breath or having swollen ankles. These could be signs of heart failure or your heart failure getting worse.
  • Common side effects:
  1. You may notice that your pulse rate becomes slower while you are taking the tablets. This is normal, but if you are concerned, please tell your doctor about it.
  2. Cold hands and feet.
  3. Diarrhea.
  4. Feeling sick (nausea).
  5. Feeling tired or aching and tired muscles.

 

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Normoten 100 Mg Tablets

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

 

Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advice To Reduce Blood Pressure

  • To measure blood pressure correctly:
  1. Don’t eat or drink anything 30 minutes before you take your blood pressure.
  2. Empty your bladder before your reading.
  3. Sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported for at least 5 minutes before your reading.
  4. Put both feet flat on the ground and keep your legs uncrossed.
  5. Rest your arm with the cuff on a table at chest height.
  6. Make sure the blood pressure cuff is snug but not too tight. The cuff should be against your bare skin, not over clothing.
  7. Do not talk while your blood pressure is being measured.

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Normoten 100 Mg Tablets

  • Talk to your doctor before taking Atenolol tablets if:
  1. You have asthma, wheezing, or any other similar breathing problems, or you get allergic reactions, for example to insect stings.
  2. You have a type of chest pain (angina) called Prinzmetal's angina.
  3. You have poor blood circulation or controlled heart failure.
  4. You have a first-degree heart block.
  5. You have diabetes.
  6. You have thyrotoxicosis
  7. You have problems with your kidneys.
  • You must consult your doctor if you are planning to combine Atenolol tablets with the medicines listed below:
  1. Clonidine
  2. Verapamil, diltiazem and nifedipine
  3. Disopyramide, quinidine or amiodarone
  4. Digoxin
  5. Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine
  6. Ibuprofen or indometacin
  7. Insulin or medicines that you take by mouth for diabetes.
  8. Medicines to treat nose or sinus congestion or other cold remedies.

 

Storage Conditions Of Normoten 100 Mg Tablets

  • Store below 25°c
  • Don’t refrigerate
  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.

 

Normal Ranges

  • Normal: Blood pressure numbers of less than 120/80 mm Hg
  • Elevated: is when readings consistently range from 120-129 systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic.
  • Hypertension Stage 1: is when blood pressure consistently ranges from 130-139 systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic.
  • Hypertension Stage 2: is when blood pressure consistently ranges at 140/90 mm Hg or higher.
  • Hypertensive crisis: This stage of high blood pressure requires medical attention. If your blood pressure readings suddenly exceed 180/120 mm Hg, wait five minutes and then test your blood pressure again. If your readings are still unusually high, contact your doctor immediately. You could be experiencing a hypertensive crisis.
