Mechanism Of Action Of Domperidone 0.1 % Suspension

  • The DA2-receptor antagonist domperidone antagonizes the inhibitory effect of dopamine, resulting in stimulation of gastric muscle contraction. This provides a mechanism for the gastrokinetic effect of domperidone.

 

Therapeutic Indications Of Dompy Suspension

  • Suspension is used in adults to treat the following symptoms: nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting (being sick), a heavy stomach or bloating, a sensation of discomfort in the stomach area, or when stomach contents flow back into the gullet, as with belching and heartburn.

 

Method Of Administration Of Dompy Suspension

  • It is recommended to take domperidone before meals, as when taken after meals, the absorption of the medicine is slightly delayed.
  • If the bottle is protected by a childproof cap. To open the bottle, press down the plastic screwcap whilst turning it counterclockwise as shown below.
  • Mix the contents of the bottle completely using a gentle tilting motion to avoid the formation of foam
  • Measure the amount required into the accompanying dosing cap.
  • Do not dilute domperidone and do not mix with other liquids.
  • Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age and with a bodyweight of 35 kg or more: The usual dose is 10ml to 20ml to be taken 3 or 4 times daily, with a maximum daily dose of 80ml
  • Children 12 years of age or less: If this medicine is used on prescription, your doctor will explain to you exactly how much of this medicine to give to the child, and how often.
  • You should not use it for longer than 14 days.
  • Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
  • If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
  • Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

 

Undesirable Side Effects Of Dompy Suspension

  • Very rare (reported by fewer than 1 in 10,000 patients):
  1. Seizures
  2. Involuntary movements of the face or arms and legs, excessive trembling,
  3. Excessive muscle stiffness or muscle spasm
  4. A type of reaction that may occur soon after administration and is recognized
  5. By skin rash, itching, shortness of breath, and/or a swollen face
  6. A severe hypersensitivity reaction that may occur soon after administration
  7. That is characterized by hives, itching, flushing, fainting, and difficulty
  8. Breathing among other possible symptoms
  9. Heart rhythm disorder
  10. Unexpected death resulting from an abrupt loss of heart function in a person
  11. Who may or may not have known heart disease

 

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Dompy Suspension

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

 

Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advice To Reduce Nausea & Vomiting

  • When trying to control nausea:
  1. Drink clear or ice-cold drinks.
  2. Eat light, bland foods (such as saltine crackers or plain bread).
  3. Avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods.
  4. Eat slowly and eat smaller, more frequent meals.
  5. Do not mix hot and cold foods.
  6. Drink beverages slowly.
  7. Avoid activity after eating.
  8. Avoid brushing your teeth after eating.
  9. Choose foods from all the food groups as you can tolerate them to get adequate nutrition.
  • Treatment for vomiting (regardless of age or cause) includes:
  1. Drinking gradually larger amounts of clear liquids
  2. Avoiding solid food until the vomiting episode has passed
  3. Resting
  4. Temporarily discontinuing all oral medications, which can irritate the stomach and make vomiting worse
  • Take your infant or a child under 6 years old to the doctor if:
  1. Vomiting lasts more than a few hours
  2. Diarrhea is also present
  3. Signs of dehydration occur
  4. There is a fever
  5. The child hasn't urinated for six hours

 

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Dompy Suspension

  • Do not use the medication if you are:
  1. Are allergic (hypersensitive) to domperidone or any of the other ingredients
  2. Have stomach bleeding or if you regularly have severe abdominal pain or persistent black stools
  3. Have a blocked or perforated gut.
  4. Have a tumor of the pituitary gland (prolactinoma).
  5. Taking certain medicines that slow down the metabolism (the breaking down) of other medicines in the body and can also affect your heart rhythms such as ketoconazole, fluconazole, or voriconazole, which are used to treat fungal infections; the antibiotics erythromycin, clarithromycin, or telithromycin; or amiodarone, a heart medicine.
  6. If you have or have had liver disease.
  7. If you have renal disease
  8. It is important to ask your doctor or pharmacist when you are taking any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
