Mechanism Of Action Of Cefixime
- Cefixime is a cephalosporin. Like penicillins, it is a beta-lactam antibiotic. It acts by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall thus it inhibits the bacterial cell wall synthesis.
- Without a cell wall, a bacterial cell is vulnerable to outside water and molecular pressures, which causes the cell to quickly die.
Therapeutic Indications Of Cefix Suspension
- It is indicated for the treatment of the following acute infections when caused by susceptible microorganisms:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI): e.g. otitis media; and other URTI where the causative organism is known or suspected to be resistant to other commonly used antibiotics, or where treatment failure may carry significant risk.
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infection: e.g. bronchitis.
- Urinary Tract Infections: e.g. cystitis, cystourethritis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis.
Method Of Administration Of Cefix Suspension
- Cefixime is for oral use
- The usual course of treatment is 7 days. This may be continued for up to 14 days if required.
- Adults and Children over 10 Years or weighing more than 50 kg: The recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of infection, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses.
- Elderly: Elderly patients may be given the same dose as recommended for adults.
- Renal function should be assessed and dosage should be adjusted in severe renal impairment
- Children under 10 Years: Cefixime 200 mg is not recommended for use in children under 10 years old.
- The safety and efficacy of cefixime have not been established in children less than 6 months.
- Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
- If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
- If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
- Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.
Undesirable Side Effects Of Cefix Suspension
- Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Dizziness
- Dyspepsia
- Vaginitis
- Thrombocytopenia

- The dosage must be adjusted according to the grade of renal impairment
- Cefixime can predispose to encephalopathy risk (which may include convulsions, confusion, impairment of consciousness, movement disorders), particularly in case of overdose or renal impairment.
- Cefixime may cause acute renal failure
- A false-positive reaction for glucose in the urine may occur
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medications including over-the-counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.

- Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
Normal Ranges
- The average normal oral temperature is 98.6°F (37°C).
- A rectal temperature is 0.5 F (0.3 C) to 1 F (0.6 C) higher than an oral temperature.
- An ear (tympanic) temperature is 0.5 F (0.3 C) to 1 F (0.6 C) higher than an oral temperature.
