Mefenamic Acid is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is responsible for prostaglandin synthesis, an integral part of the pain and inflammation pathway.

Mefenamic Acid is used in patients (≥ 14 years) for:
Management of mild to moderate pain, when therapy will not exceed one week (7 days)
For treatment of primary dysmenorrhea (Pain during menstruation)

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.

Doses may change from patient to patient based on your age, your medical condition, and whether or not you are taking other medicines.
Take with or right after a meal to reduce stomach upset
For the relief of acute pain in adults and adolescents= 14 years of age, the recommended dose is 500 mg as an initial dose followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed, usually not to exceed one week
For the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea, the recommended dose is 500 mg as an initial dose followed by 250 mg every 6 hours not to exceed 2 to 3 days.
Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

Stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, wind, and loss of appetite
Headache, dizziness, and vertigo
Skin rash or spots
Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations), chest pain, and heart disorders

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding

You are being treated for an infection. This medicine can mask or hide a fever, which is a sign of infection.
You have diabetes, high cholesterol, or are a smoker. These can increase your risk of heart disease.
You are a woman trying to become pregnant.
You are over 65 years of age.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medications including over-the-counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.
