Ethamsylate acts on the first step of hemostasis by improving platelet adhesiveness and restoring capillary resistance.

Etamsylate is used in adults and children above one year of age for the prevention and treatment of bleeding
heavy periods in women
gastrointestinal bleeding
haemorrhagic urinary disorders after having an operation on your prostate gland or urinary tract after having an operation on your ear, nose or throat after having heart, abdominal or gynecological surgery
bleeding after you have been treated with another medicine to break down blood clots

Treatment of Local Fibrinolysis: The usual dose is 500-1000mg three times a day.
Treatment of General Fibrinolysis: The usual dose is 1000mg every 6 to 8 hours, or up to 15mg per kg of body weight.
Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:

Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing
Signs of blood clot
feeling sick
being sick
diarrhea
skin rash

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding

The first step if you’re bleeding is to apply firm pressure to the wound and elevate it above your heart

if you have had blood in your urine, which could indicate that there is a clot in your upper urinary tract
if you are at risk of having blood clots
if you suffer from excessive clotting or bleeding throughout your body (disseminated intravascular coagulation). Your doctor may
carry out a blood test to see if the process that inhibits blood clotting (called fibrinolysis) is activated
if you have had convulsions (fits). Your doctor will use the minimum dose possible to avoid further convulsions after the treatment
if you are on long term treatment with Etamsylate pay attention to any possible disturbances in your color vision. If necessary, your doctor may discontinue the treatment. With continuous, long term use of Etamsylate regular eye tests are recommended.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including over the counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins and supplements.
